Pademelon Wallaby
These small wallabies are very common around Tarraleah. You will see them outside your cottage at night – and probably hear them as they ‘bounce’ away from you in the park.
The species was once abundant on the mainland but has died out there completely.
Bennets Wallaby
Like the Pademelon, the Bennets wallaby is common at Tarraleah. The Bennets wallaby is much longer than the Pademelon and stands nearly a metre tall.
The Bennets like to come at night and eat the pasture.
Best place to see them is at night near the Penstock Pipes.
Wedge Tailed Eagle
Often seen above Tarraleah, a pair nests in the valley below the town. Usually only one chick is raised a year but our pair seem to have been successfully rearing 2-3.
The eagle's size makes it easily recognisable from any other raptor.
Take a walk along the Eagle Track and there is a good chance you may see one or two soaring above you. The eagles are now rare in Tasmania with estimates of only 80 pairs left.
Tasmanian Devil
Once very common, the Devils in Tasmania have succumbed to a cancer like disease which has significantly reduced numbers. There are still Devils at Tarraleah and if you hear a scream at night in the woods – it’s a Devil.
Devils are nocturnal, and your best chance to see one is on the guided night walk. There are Devils in the vicinity of the Quoll track and the Eagle track. Their scats can be seen along both the Quoll track and the Eagle track.
Thylacine (Tasmanian Tiger)
Not yet officially extinct, the last captive tiger died in 1936. There have however been many sightings: one of the most famous and well documented sighting was by our own wildlife guide Hans Naarding.
Hans was fortunate enough to see one for a full three minutes.
Even if you don’t see a tiger, you can meet the last man to have actually seen one!
Superb Fairy Wren
Hopping around the tables at Teez Café is where you will see these exquisite little birds. The male has a bright blue crown and a glossy dark chest. The females are brown all over.
The birds nearly always stick to small family groups. Often it appears as though there is one male with a small group of females, but in winter many of the males will lose their colourful plumage and adopt similar plumage to females.
There is abundant wildlife in and around Tarraleah.
Many can be easily spotted but we suggest joining the evening wildlife tour learn more about our wildlife and spot some of our shy noctural animals.
